Waste and Recycling
Bins are located in the basement level on the left hand side as you walk out of the basement foyer.
There are two general waste (red top) and two recycling (yellow top) bins in the waste room. General waste is collected on Friday mornings, while the recycling may be collected Friday afternoon or Saturday.
Water is available in the bin area to rinse your bins or clean up after a spill.
A couple of common sense tips
- Be mindful of moving garbage between apartments and the basement to keep the lift and foyers clean
- Crush boxes for recycling
- With recycling, if in doubt whether something is ok to recycle, best to use general waste (otherwise, we risk contaminating the recycling bins, and everything goes as general waste).
Hard Rubbish
Hard rubbish collection is organised when required and a collection point is generally setup in Nelson Street. We have a set number of collections per year for the building, so it’s best if we all work together to use them as a group rather than individually. If it’s been a while since the last collection and you have a need, let oc@holly.net.au know to co-ordinate a pickup with the Port Phillip Council.
Glass and FOGO (Food and Organic Composting)
Following the successful communal food and garden organics (FOGO) and glass recycling trials, Port Phillip Council now have 80 communal hubs in selected local parks and reserves.
It’s also a great way to take advantage of the communal glass recycling bins in your area to dispose of glass bottles and jars. All glass collected is recycled at our local processor where it is either used in construction or turned into other glass materials in Victoria.
You can dispose of your FOGO materials into the communal FOGO hubs where it will be recycled into compost and soil conditioner to be used on Victorian farms.
